Job Description

Position Summary:
The Medical Assistant I maintains department patient care supplies, ensures timely flow of patients, and assists physicians and nurses to provide optimal care to patients and families.

Qualifications:
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
High School Diploma/Equivalent

CERTIFICATION & LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS
Basic Life Support (BLS). Successful completion of medical terminology course within six (6) months of start date in position.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
One (1) year preferred Related Field

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
Capacity to learn and retain information regarding patient care procedures. Demonstrates compassion and caring in dealing with others.

Essential Functions:

  • Perform a variety of routine direct patient care duties to assist medical and nursing staff in the examination and treatment of patients.
  • Rooming patients: Collecting pertinent information regarding the patient's chief complaint, family history, social history, surgical history, and medication reconciliation upon arrival for a patient visit.
  • Maintain department specific competencies related to point of care testing, equipment handling, and specialty training.
  • Prepare patient and supplies for department specific procedures
  • Perform vital signs, fetal heart rate, reconcile medications, obtain medical/surgical/family history of patients being seen in MFM
  • Room patients and prepare patient appropriately based on visit type and clean room after patient leaves
  • Order/maintain medical supplies and stock exam rooms as needed
  • Prepare specimens obtained correctly and transport to laboratory
  • Perform Quality Control/Point of Care on testing supplies utilized in MFM
  • Assist provider during procedures specific to MFM; e.g. amniocentesis, cerclage removal, IUD insertion/removal
  • Appropriately and thoroughly document nursing care
