Job Summary (includes but is not limited to the following; other duties may be assigned)

The Water Treatment Operator carries out all routine water chemistry sampling and analysis and operates water treatment equipment.

Job Responsibilities

  • Perform water chemistry analysis on a routine basis.
  • Maintain Logs as assigned.
  • Report any abnormal or irregular conditions to the CRO that develop during the progress of the work and take corrective measures as directed by the CRO and within the scope of operating instructions.
  • Assist maintenance personnel during maintenance periods.
  • Participate in the administrative maintenance of the plant chemistry manual and all technical references, prints, diagrams, and preventive/predictive maintenance records associated with water treatment equipment.
  • Monitory plant water chemistry program and environmental effluents and provide direction to CRO's and PBO's on necessary adjustments.
  • Complete other tasks as required by the Control Room Operator or Plant Management.
  • The Water Treatment Operator operates from established and well-known procedures under minimum supervision performing duties independently with only general direction given. The Water Treatment Operator encounters recurring work situations of moderate complexity with occasional variations from the norm. Decisions are made within prescribed operating and casualty procedures and guidelines.
  • The Water Treatment Operator must perform work in a safe manner resulting in no accidents and in compliance with all environmental permits at all times. The Water Treatment Operator must effectively communicate information to the supervision and fellow operation and maintenance personnel, relative to the condition of the plant equipment and performance and provide suggestions for plant improvements. The Water Treatment Operator must perform duties in such a way to result in an optimum cost-benefit ration.
  • All employees have the responsibility to both the customer and their co-workers to do the job right the first time and to ensure the customer's needs are being met.
  • The Water Treatment Operator reports to the Operations Manager. Receives work direction from the CRO.

Job Requirements

  • Ability to understand procedures and instructions specific to the area of assignment as would be acquired with a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum two years' experience in power plant operations.
  • Experience in water chemistry control, analysis of water conditions, water treatment facility operations, and chemical handling requirements is required.
  • Theoretical and practical knowledge of combustion/steam turbine operations, closed system steam generation, industrial safety, hazardous waste management and inspection/recording of plant parameters is required.
  • Experience with piping and instrument schematics and process controls is required.
  • Extensive working knowledge of power plant operations and water chemistry fundamentals is desirable.
  • Must successfully complete the PBO qualifications.
  • Physical requirements include: working on feet for 12-hour periods, stair and ladder climbing, routine lifting 50 pounds, and heavy cleanup work. Wearing of uniform work clothing, if provided by Calpine, is required. Protective equipment must be work in the performance of some duties (e.g. hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves, high voltage protective equipment, etc.) Work with hazardous materials may be required.
  • Position may require extended working hours and varied shifts with the possibility of weekend and holiday work, as required by schedules, work load and plant conditions.
  • All employees will participate in the Fitness of Duty Program. This program includes a post-offer physical examination, drug screening, and post-employment random drug screening.
