Responsibilities

Draper is seeking a senior-level technical professional with the experience and demonstrated success essential to providing the technical leadership necessary to develop, apply, and deliver world class engineering capabilities to enable Draper's National Security Mission.

The Precision Instrumentation and Production Engineering Director will lead approximately 400 engineers and scientists in the areas of Precision Sensors and Devices, Advanced Sensor Development including Quantum-Based Devices, Microelectromechanical (MEMs), Microelectronics, Optics and Electro-Optic Fabrication, Applied Materials Engineering, and the design of systems for higher levels of Manufacturing Readiness.

The Director will report to the Vice President of Engineering and will have between 5-8 direct reports comprised of division leaders and lead engineers.

Specific responsibilities include:

    Contribute to the Draper's strategic plan, and develop and implement the strategy for the Directorate.
  • Develop and deliver innovative technologies, system concepts and designs, and deployable, quality solutions for the nation's most challenging problems.
  • Develop roadmaps to direct investments in the technologies, capabilities, resources, infrastructure, processes and external awareness in alignment with business and technology strategies.
  • Provide processes, controls, technical expertise, design authority and oversight to facilitate excellence in proposal development and project execution.
  • Expand Draper's production engineering capabilities, staff, skills, and infrastructure.
  • Manage operational and capital budgets for a laboratory-intensive organization, including long-term facilities and capital planning to support projected needs.
  • Collaborate with the business units across the organization and support customer engagement and problem identification, and further Draper's external business and technical collaborations.
  • Attract, retain, develop and apply a talented, diverse, and dedicated workforce, as well as manage performance evaluation and compensation processes.
  • Foster an atmosphere of collaboration that allows all team members to be empowered to innovate.
  • Emphasize university and industry partnerships in the development of novel solutions.
Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have a degree in electrical, mechanical, or aerospace engineering, physics, or related field, preferably with an advanced degree in one of these disciplines, and at least 15 years of demonstrated leadership experience in driving the application of multidisciplinary technologies to the solution of complex engineering problems.

The qualified candidate must be performance driven, a self-starter and have demonstrated consistently outstanding performance in his/her career including experience achieving results through proven use of other leaders. The individual must have a proven track record in the successful execution of both internally and externally-funded programs with respect to cost, schedule and tactical metrics. Strong interpersonal, communication, and collaboration capabilities are essential.

Additional desired qualifications include:

  • Substantial experience leading a large team, preferably with relevance to one or more of Draper's existing business areas and core technical competencies.
  • Successful examples of identifying, developing, demonstrating, and transitioning technology into deployable systems and DoD programs of record.
  • Strong contact and relationships with government sponsors, professional organizations and potential partners.

This position requires moderate travel.

Applicant selected will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information. A Secret clearance is required; a TS/SCI clearance is preferred.
